What it is

Driving your knee upward and forward with assertive force — like you're defending yourself. Not a gentle lift. An assertive, forward motion that tells your biggest muscles to do the work your smallest muscles have been struggling with.

Why it matters

A strong knee drive creates a longer stride without overstriding. It engages your hip flexors and quads — large muscles that many runners underuse. For runners experiencing shin splints, knee pain, or calf tightness: knee drive can help address the underlying pattern by shifting workload from lower leg to upper leg.

The neuroscience

The knee drive technique optimizes the swing phase of the gait cycle by maximizing the contribution of the hip flexors, particularly the iliopsoas complex. This powerful motion creates a stretch-shortening cycle in the hip extensors, storing elastic energy released during the subsequent stance phase. This "hip flexor spring" contributes significantly to propulsive forces during running. Your CNS can update this movement pattern in a single session — all it needs is the right cue and a good night's sleep.

How to practice it

  1. 1Against a wall in Static Switch position: drive knee UP and FORWARD
  2. 2Imagine defending yourself — assertive, not gentle
  3. 3Make sure your foot lands back in the exact same spot
  4. 4Keep your ankle below your butt at all times
  5. 5Three intensities: Slow (perfect form), Consistent (walking pace), Fast (sprinting from a tiger)
